Optimizing your website to be "search engine friendly" is an ever changing art that requires a specialized skill set to perform. Constantly monitoring and making tweaks here and there will keep search engines routinely visiting your website. In theory, the more they visit the better it is. There are two basic methods for optimizing a website. Both revolve around generating better results in the search engines. Let's focus on Google, since Google is king.
This means that your website has been optimized by placing well thought out keywords throughout the content on your site. You have effective title bars and everything has been organically optimized for Google. Now you have to wait for Google to start indexing your site. If the site is built correctly Google will identify your site as something to keep an eye on and will return from time to time to see what's going on. If it likes what it sees then it will return more often and say nicer things about you. This process takes longer but just like with friends, they are better friends if they like you for you and not for your money. It's amazing how quickly "money" friends stop coming around when you stop buying things. Real friendships however stand the test of time and they just like hanging out with you.
You identify which kind of friends you want to hang out with and pay the cover charge. It's that simple. After you run out of money then you no longer get to hang out with them. Bring more money and you can hang out again.
If you have a product to sell to a very focused audience and you know they are going to be at a certain club on Saturday night at 10pm then it will probably be worth it to spend some money to get in front of those potential buyers. However just throwing money at pay-per-click without properly doing the homework and market research is foolish and you might as well be throwing your money away.
